Viral Marketing. Not As Contagious As You Might Think

Viral marketing is surely the ultimate form of marketing: you create something once, and then, with no effort on your part, word about your article, game, movie, product or website (or whatever it is) gets spread to others, who spread it to others, who in turn spread it to more people, and the result is non-stop, ever-growing traffic and sales.

Sounds like a dream… and, unfortunately, for most Internet marketers who create viral campaigns, such results are only the stuff of dreams. The reality is that (a) Internet marketers engaged in viral marketing have to put a considerable amount of work – and sometimes lots of money – into developing such campaigns and (b) most of them don’t become viral at all.

In fact, calling something a viral marketing campaign is a bit of a misnomer since it’s only viral if it has, indeed, exhibited viral characteristics i.e. growth in the pass-along consumption of the content has been exponentially self-perpetuating. So you can’t really ‘develop’ a viral campaign; you can really only hope that a particular marketing campaign will become viral. Still, we’ll describe such campaigns as ‘viral’ for the sake of convenience.

So what’s the reality concerning viral marketing? Well, recent research shows that while 24 percent of Internet marketers attempt viral initiatives, only 15 percent of such campaigns actually induce the spread of the relevant marketing message. Meanwhile, far from being a cheap form of marketing, many attempted viral or word of mouth marketing campaigns involve expensive development e.g. the development of ingenious or cool games and costly seeding i.e. planting news of the campaign on social media sites and elsewhere.

The hit and miss nature of viral marketing means that no-one can really ensure a successful campaign. Still we can look at the campaigns that have been successful and identify some common factors that may be indicative of why they were so successful.

Some of these common factors are: offering free content of high perceived value, utilizing a fairly effortless way for people to pass along the content, and, in terms of seeding the campaign, making it highly rewarding for people to promote the content in the first place.

These are fairly generic factors but, in the absence of a sure-fire recipe for viral success, we can’t really go beyond describing the fairly general factors for success. While the pay-off from a viral marketing campaign can be enormous, it is far from certain.

For that reason, while I would definitely encourage Internet marketers to try viral marketing and to implement viral elements in your marketing – e.g. buttons at the bottom of blog articles to allow people to bookmark or ‘retweet’ your articles – I would never advise you to rest your entire business on viral initiatives. Base your online marketing, instead, on tried and true approaches; use viral campaigns to supplement or complement but never to replace such approaches.

Which Came First – The Chicken or Viral Marketing?

Viral marketing is nothing new, yet we still reap the benefits of it today. It remains one of the cheapest and most effective means of marketing. Everyone wants to go viral! But even before it had some swanky name, people used it. So now it’s time for a history lesson. It’ll be just like school. So sit up, pay attention, and no passing notes.

First up, I’m sure you remember the classic movie Spartacus. Did you ever consider that Spartacus (the person) went viral? Think about it. He challenged the status quo. But not only that, he challenged Rome. So just the fact that he was doing something risky got him recognition. That’s one way you can go viral. Create controversy. Walk the line. You don’t have to do anything illegal, you don’t have to anger potential customers, but you can very easily be edgy. Involve people’s emotions and you’ll get a reaction.

What was the result of Spartacus going viral? Well, during the course of his conquest, more and more people joined his cause. The point is, if you make people “feel”, you’ll get the same viral reaction. Customers, or at least buzz, will flock your way.

On the subject of movies and ancient times, think of the movie 300. Again, it was slightly stylized, but most of the story remains true. Unfortunately for the soldiers who fought the Persians, they went viral post-mortem. The good news is, death isn’t necessary to go viral. What helped the Spartans and their allies become renowned throughout the ages? Tenacity. They would not give up. Of course, in the business world, if you’re not tenacious, you won’t survive. Sometimes, we seem to get beaten as badly as the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae. How do we react, though? You certainly won’t overcome by letting the story end there. The key to going viral is not giving up.

There’s one more lesson from the story of Thermopylae. The reason we still know about that battle today is because of a man named Herodotus. He was a great historian, quite often called the Father of History. Herodotus wrote extensively of the Persian Wars and immortalized the Battle of Thermopylae. What we can learn from this is we don’t have to go viral on our own. The great thing about viral marketing is that it consists of people talking. It may not matter who started the viral reaction as long as you are there for the duration of it. Sure, it’s probably better to be the reason everyone is excited (you just get more buzz), but you can just as easily ride the coattails of someone else.

Remember when everyone went nuts over Twitter? Not everyone can create as much buzz as Twitter did, but it was really easy to jump on the bandwagon and ride the marketing train. Herodotus didn’t fight the Persians at Thermopylae, but we know about that battle because of him. He tied his name into a great feat. Did you tie your name into Twitter? Will you tie your name into the next great viral buzz?

That’s enough history for one day. And it begs the question: Which came first, the chicken or viral marketing? Perhaps we’ll never know. So while we still enjoy eating chickens and viral marketing, remember that these things won’t go away anytime soon. Be edgy, tenacious, and keep an eye out for the next viral storm.

The purpose is to create a buzz that gets people talking about your post and linking to it. All those web hits and backlinks will be good for your business as long as you do it right. You have to be careful about stirring controversy or making statements that are untrue because it might blow up in your face and even hurt your business.
  5. Viral marketing failures are not uncommon even among big businesses with huge advertising budgets. It is difficult to predict what will take off and what will be a flop. There are many good viral marketing examples you can learn from such as Burger King’s Subservient Chicken video and Blendtec’s “Will it Blend?” videos. These were successful in part because they were interactive and unique.

Remember also to make your video or report easy to be shared. Allow your videos to be embedded on other websites and let your reports be freely shared. List building is the first and most important step in internet marketing. Everybody says the money is in the list. What this means is that you have to have an audience to sell to. That audience is your list.
